Crochet Tips for Beginners

Tip#1

Keep your stitches and rows nice and even. If the rows aren't even your project could begin to start looking like something else completely.

Tip#2

When you buy yarn or hooks, try and keep the size of your hook to what the size suggests on your yarn. For example, if you want something nice and tight and have a much bigger hook than what your yarn suggests, it will come out big and loose instead.

Tip#3

Take lots of pictures while you are doing your project. You can use these for your blog or your own personal use. Some people remember from words, others by pictures. Better safe than sorry.

Tip#4

Keep a list of your yarn colors or keep the paper on the yarn after you bring it home. When you start a project the paper might rip apart or come off of your yarn and you need the information from the paper for your yarn. If you are selling your project or giving it as a gift you need to list what ingredients were made with the yarn in case anyone has any allergies to the products. Plus there is usually a pattern on the inside of the label that you can use for later.

Tip#5

Stitch markers and counting! When I was a beginner, and stitching in the round (continously stitching, no casting off between rows) I would always lose my place. You can always invest in stitch markers and row counters but a good old pad and pen (or excel and a mouse) to keep track of what row you're on and how many stitches you should be counting.

Tip#6

If you're using 2 colors with your project, make sure to try and keep the yarns away from each other. It may look harmless when 2 yarns get together but really in the end you will spend lots of time getting knots out of silly yarn strings.

Tip#7

Before beginning your project make sure that you have looked through the pattern (usually a pdf file or paper) to make sure that you know all the stitches and abbreviations for the pattern you're using. I had to look up a couple (magic ring-, sl st-slip stitch, YO-yarn over) for my first time reading a pattern, but after a little while you get the hang of it.

Tip#8

Use good lighting because sometimes it's hard to see the stitches when you're in darker spaces and if you can't see very good, you can't keep track of your stitches or rows. (Unless you're good like that)

Tip#9

When you're reading a pattern make sure that you are going to have enough yarn to finish the project. You don't wanna be caught with your pants off (so to speak) and not be able to finish your project in case they run out of the same color yarn you were using.

Tip #10-The Most Important Tip!

If at first you don't succeed, try try again. I would be working on a hat or beanie or something new and i would get frustrated because it was something new I was working on and not familiar with it. If you need to, take a breath, and start over or go do something else. Watch a movie, tv show, whatever to get your mind off of it. Usually when you are thinking about it or not thinking about anything the solution or what you did wrong comes to mind. If I can crochet, so can you.
